¡Hola a todos! Como recordaréis hoy nos vamos a Nueva York de la mano de mi invitada Kate del blog Embarrassment of Riches, dedicado precisamente a la vida en esta ciudad. Esta blogger, experta en la Gran Manzana, pues vive allí desde hace años, nos propone aquí un recorrido alternativo a los lugares típicos, por un barrio que tiene visos de convertirse en un imprescindible de la ciudad. Se trata de un paseo muy completo, algo picante por momentos y con muchas recomendaciones gastronómicas y para salir. Como Kate ha escrito el post en inglés, yo he hecho a continuación de cada párrafo y en cursiva una traducción en español. Sin más os dejo con Kate y su particular visión de Nueva York...

Most visitors to Manhattan make sure to include a trip to Times Square on their itinerary. It’s certainly an iconic spot, but as a New Yorker I would argue against overstaying your welcome there. Times Square is crowded, commercialized, and overpriced. It functions as a tourist trap, where millions annually fall victim to the lure of soulless shopping and mediocre chain restaurants. 

La mayoría de los que visitan Manhattan se aseguran de incluir en su itinerario una visita a Times Square. Es sin duda un lugar icónico, pero como neoyorquina no aconsejaría prolongar demasiado tu tiempo allí. Está lleno de gente, tiene demasiados comercios y los precios son muy altos. Funciona como una trampa para turistas donde millones caen anualmente víctimas de la atracción que provocan el shopping impersonal y las cadenas de restaurantes mediocres.

Fortunately, a short stroll from Times Square down Broadway puts you squarely in one of Manhattan’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods, NoMad (North of Madison Square Park). With its overabundance of wholesale stores and sidewalk hawkers, it’s not strikingly beautiful the way Greenwich Village or Nolita is. NoMad is lacking in the looks department but it makes up for this with innovation. The neighborhood’s anchor, the Ace Hotel, is an emporium of fun. Your appetite (and the amount of time you’re willing to wait for a coveted table) will dictate whether you want to dine at meaty gastropub The Breslin or snag a stool at the The John Dory for some seafood. You can also pick up a quick, inventive sandwich (like an eggplant parm-and-BBQ potato chip hero!) at No. 7 Sub. One of the Ace’s biggest draws is Stumptown Coffee Roasters, where they take their coffee (and pastries) seriously. Grab an Americano and a mini olive oil bundt cake and head into the Ace’s cavernous-yet-cozy lobby to people-watch.

Afortunadamente, un corto paseo desde Times Square bajando Broadway nos sitúa de lleno en uno de los barrios con más futuro de Manhattan, NoMad (Norte de Madison Square Park). Con su abundancia de tiendas al por mayor y vendedores ambulantes en las aceras, no destaca por su belleza como lo hacen Greenwich Village o Nolita. A NoMad le falta estética pero compensa esto con innovación. El ancla del barrio, el Ace Hotel, es un emporio de la diversión. Tu apetito (y la cantidad de tiempo que quieras esperar por una codiciada mesa) determinarán si quieres cenar en el jugoso gastropub The Breslin o pillar un taburete en The John Dorypara probar algo de marisco. También puedes conseguir un rápido e ingenioso sandwich (como un "eggplant parm-and-BBQ potato chip hero") en No. 7 Sub. Uno de los más grandes atractivos del Ace es Stumptown Coffee Roasters, donde se toman muy en serio su café y sus dulces. Hazte con un Americano y un "mini olive oil bundt cake" y dirígete al profundo y oscuro aunque acogedor lobby del Ace para ver a la gente pasar.

The hotel’s two shops, No. 8A and Opening Ceremony, are filled with beautiful things that are well outside my budget. I especially enjoy cooing over the jewelry and Laduree candles at the latter. If you can't make a pilgrimage to the larger, original outpost of Opening Ceremony in Soho (a shame, really), get your fill of quirky, obscure fashion here.

Las dos tiendas del hotel, No. 8A y Opening Ceremony están llenas de cosas bonitas que están muy por encima de mi presupuesto. Disfruto especialmente quedándome embobada con la joyería y las velas de Laduree en la última. Si no puedes ir al punto de venta original y más grande de Opening Ceremony en el  Soho (una verdadera pena) aquí quedarás satisfecho en lo que se refiere a moda extravagante y poco conocida.

A few blocks south of the Ace you’ll find the Museum of Sex. It’s small but well-curated, and a few current exhibits definitely make it worth the price of admission. A visit to the Museum of Sex is not for the squeamish: at first, I instinctively averted my eyes (as if staring at the sun) when confronted with such graphic content. I had to continuously remind myself that poring over every detail at museums, even this one, is perfectly acceptable.

Un par de manzanas al sur del Ace encontraréis el Museo del Sexo. Es pequeño pero está bien gestionado y algunas exposiciones temporales bien merecen el precio de admisión. La visita al Museo del Sexo no es para los más aprensivos: al principio aparté la mirada instintivamente (como si mirara directamente al sol) cuando me enfrenté a un contenido tan gráfico. Tuve que recordarme a mí misma continuamente que estudiar minuciosamente cada detalle en los museos, incluso en este, es perfectamente aceptable.

If you continue south, Jim Campbell’s Scattered Light installation will beckon to you from Madison Square Park. The artist hung 2000 LED bulbs from a suspension truss; it's quietly eerie on a winter's night. Once it is disassembled in February, the park will surely offer something else captivating for the public. (Last spring, Antony Gormley's Jumpers installation literally stopped traffic. In the early fall, they screened matches of the US Open for free.)

Si continúas hacia el sur, la instalación de luz Jim Campbell's Scattered Light llamará tu atención desde Madison Square Park. El artista ha colgado 2000 lámparas de LED en suspensión y el conjunto es discretamente sobrecogedor en una noche de invierno. In you’re not still stuffed from your visit to the Ace, hop in line at the original Madison Square Park location of Shake Shack, a New York institution. Waiting is half the fun (especially in the evening, when the lights they’ve strung above the tables twinkle brighter than the surrounding skyscrapers.) If you time it right (like I once did), you can wave to your loved ones at home via their website’s live Shack Cam while waiting to order.

Si todavía no te has llenado con la visita al Ace haz cola en la sede original de Shake Shack en el Madison Square Park, una institución en Nueva York. Esperar es parte de la diversión (sobre todo por la tarde, cuando las luces que han colgado sobre las mesas brillan con más fuerza que los rascacielos de alrededor). Si calculas bien el tiempo (como yo hice una vez) mientras esperas a pedir  puedes saludar a tus seres queridos en casa a través de la cámara en vivo de su web.

Resisting Shake Shack's frozen custard for dessert is no easy feat, but if you backtrack slightly to Hill Country Chicken, a case full of pies awaits you. There are teeny cups, slices, and larger sizes of choices like salted margarita, banana cream, bourbon pecan, and lemon meringue. A scoop of homemade ice cream on the side is really a non-negotiable.

Resistirse al helado de crema de Shake Shack de postre no es fácil, pero si caminas ligeramente sobre tus propios pasos hacia Hill Country Chicken, una caja llena de pasteles te espera. Hay pequeños vasos de papel, pedazos, y tamaños más grandes de saborescomo margarita salada, crema de plátano, nuez de bourbon, y merengue de limón. Una bola de helado casero al lado es innegociable.

Mario Batali's recently-opened Italian superstore Eataly is adjacent to Madison Square Park. It's worth battling the ever-present crowds to gawk at their beautiful produce, pastas, and cheeses. Not that you'd be hungry, but there are casual food counters and several restaurants (each revolving round a theme: pizza, vegetables, and seafood are but three). You may even meet the gregarious chef himself.

Eataly, el supermercado italiano abierto recientemente por el chef Mario Batali es adyacente a Madison Square Park y bien merece enfrentarse a las siempre presentes multitudes para quedarse embobado con sus increíbles productos, pastas y quesos. No es que vayáis a tener hambre, pero hay mostradores de comida informal y muchos restaurantes (cada uno en torno a un tema: pizza, vegetales y marisco son sólo tres de ellos). Puede que incluso te encuentres con el propio chef, que por cierto es muy sociable.

There’s enough in NoMad to keep you occupied for an afternoon, but the beauty of this neighborhood is that it’s an excellent launching pad for other adventures. NoMad is bound by someplace interesting on each side: Chelsea with its art galleries to the west; Curry Hill (a Little India of sorts) to the east; the Flatiron District is its southernmost border and its upper limit is Koreatown (in case you have a hankering to participate in some karaoke). If you’d like to venture out of NoMad, you can't go wrong no matter which direction you choose.

Hay suficiente en NoMad para mantenerte ocupado durante una tarde, pero el atractivo de este barrio reside en que es un excelente punto de partida para otras aventuras. NoMad limita a cada lado con algún lugar interesante: Chelsea con sus galerías de arte al oeste; Curry Hill (una especie de Little India) al este; el Flatiron District es su límite más al sur y su límite al norte es Koreatown(por si tienes ganas de participar en algún karaoke). Si quieres aventurarte fuera de NoMad, no puedes equivocarte, da igual qué dirección elijas.
